Better Bartending

STIRRING:  Usually, stirring refers to martinis or only clear liquors with other clear liquors.  However, in recent years more mixed liquors are being stirred.  The cocktail should be stirred vigorously in a clear pint glass with a long spoon.  There are many purposes to stir a cocktail; chills the liquor, combines the ingredients, dilutes the drink and prevents bruising.  If you serve the cocktail over ice, always serve the drink in a glass with fresh ice.  When serving the drink without ice always serve it in a chilled glass.

Steps of stirring a drink:

  • Using a mixing glass.

  • Pour the measured liquors.

  • Fill glass 2/3 full with ice.

  • Stir the drink for 20 – 30 seconds.

  • Strain into desired glass.

  • Place garnish on the edge of the glass.

  • Present the cocktail to the guest.
